Image 1: La Iglesia     Image 2: Los Lagos

The first image shows the Volcano Arenal as it looms over the city of La Fortuna. The church and soccer field in the foreground are common sites in Costa Rica. It is said that every church, Iglesia in Spanish, is located adjacent to either a park or soccer field.

The second image is the Los Lagos lava flow. This flow made its way through the forests surrounding Arenal in 1993. Arenal has been active since the late sixties and as recently as 1996, would erupt as many as a dozen times each day. Eruptions have subsided somewhat, but you can hike this flow and see red hot boulders tumble down the side of the mountain.
